Great dining on a budget
So you want to eat at some of the best restaurants in Singapore without having to rob a bank?
There is always a promotion or deal if you look hard enough and a few great ones are floating around at the moment.
Here are some delectable ongoing promotions:
DIAMOND KITCHEN
While the first Diamond Kitchen at Marine Parade is glamorous in a getai sort of way, the Cantonese restaurant has gone upscale at its new outlet at Oasis on Science Park Drive.
The Marine Parade branch is popular and packed every weekend, and with the $88 promotion (minimum four to dine) at the Oasis branch, it might probably get just as packed.
The seven-course set menu of its signature dishes is exclusively served at Oasis, with a focus on live seafood. Dishes include shredded chicken salad with abalone, garlic steamed bamboo clam and the crowd-pleaser, lobster porridge.

JOËL ROBUCHON RESTAURANT

You may not think you can afford a meal at the restaurant at Resorts World Sentosa but on Saturdays, it offers a few set menus for lunch (noon to 2.30pm).
The legendary French chef may not be cooking there but his executive chef Michael Michaelidis is certainly holding the fort very well.
If you eat with your eyes, you might feel satisfied when you are served the amuse bouche - crab meat, caviar and an intricately-decorated seafood jelly. It was so pretty, I had to stop and stare.
And the meal just gets prettier.
For $118, you'll get one entree, a soup, two main courses and a dessert. For one main, it's $98. If you're a small eater (or the budget is cruel), it's $78 for a choice of soup or entree and a main.
The must-orders are the L'oeuf de poule (crispy soft boiled egg, Parmesan cheese mousseline and Iberico ham) and the sensational Le bar (a combination of sea bass and langoustine, with fennel sauce and sea urchin).
The La saumon is a surprising spicy salmon tartare and the dessert of La mangue (fresh mango with grape jelly) is the perfect way to end the meal.
This could be the route to the most economical Robuchon experience.

Take advantage of dining promotions such as Citibank's $100Gourmet.
Each month for a year, a visiting star chef collaborates with two top local restaurants to create an original menu, served over a period of about eight days, for $100 when charged to a Citibank credit card.
The $100Gourmet starts this month, with dinners at Saint Pierre (April 22-25), Corner House (April 23-25) and Fat Cow (April 26 to 28). Tickets to Fat Cow are sold out.
French chef Laurent Peugeot from Le Charlemagne in Burgundy, France, will work with Emmanuel Stroobant at Saint Pierre. The menu will include Chef Peugeot's marinated scallop, Chef Stroobant's white miso steamed Gindara cod and the combined dessert of sugar ball.
CORNER HOUSE

Chef Niklas Ekstedt from Restaurant Ekstedt in Stockholm, Sweden, collaborates with Chef Jason Tan. Chef Ekstedt cooks with an open flame, smoke and high heat, while Chef Tan prefers a low-heat, sous vide-style cooking.
Chef Ekstedt fries lobster in butter while Chef Tan makes his signature sous-vide free-range chicken. And together, they present the dessert Durian "East-meets-West", with durian, pear, custard and oignon des Cevennes.
