Mitzo: Traditional food, Trendy Feel
When marketing something as traditional as Chinese food, I guess it helps to dress it up. Especially when you want to appeal to the young and the trendy.
Mitzo serves traditional Chinese food in a setting that looks more like a dance club.
The food is plated to be photographed and you'll be served by trendy young people.
For refreshments, you can order a bespoke cocktail or pick from an exciting list of drinks.
The restaurant is located in the thick of the tourist belt, so that means the prices can't be as friendly as a restaurant serving the same sort of food elsewhere. But it's not too expensive.
So while it's not as pocket-friendly, it's at least cordial, and that's a draw when you don't want to spend too much.
OVERHYPED
The raves for the Mitzo special barbecued pork ($18) were resounding, but it was meh for me. It was tasty and thankfully not too sweet, but it hardly shook my core.
EXCELLENT
I thought the Mitzo black truffle crispy roast duck ($38 for half a duck) was excellent. Don't skip the skin - it's as crispy as it is shiny.
BLAND
For all the ingredients in the Mitzo braised vermicelli ($28) - scallops, prawn and cod fish - all I remembered of this dish is that it's bland.
AMAZING CRUNCH
The crispy roast pork belly ($18) was slightly salty for me but it has an amazing crunch. It's noisy but enjoyable food.
FORGETTABLE
The golden fried soft shell crab with curry floss ($22) was a nice enough snack but doesn't leave a lasting impression.
