School of frock: Big shows, bad fashion
You'd think there would be a fashion explosion at the week's twin biggies - MTV Movie Awards and Avengers: Age Of Ultron premiere - but we're sorry to disappoint you, says JEANMARIE TAN
ANNA CAMP (A-)
MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles
Dress: Peter Pilotto
Shoes: Stuart Weitzman
This is what I mean by eye candy. The Pitch Perfect actress aces the bunch and looks fresh as a daisy in this easy-breezy, kaleidoscopic mini-dress boasting resin appliques and multiple shades of orange, blue, pink and yellow. The matching pastel blue ankle-cuff sandals are icing on the cake.
EMILY RATAJKOWSKI (B)
MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles
Dress: Fausto Puglisi
Clutch: Amanda Pearl
Shoes: Giuseppe Zanotti
What's a Ratajkowski red carpet outing without a generous amount of cleavage? I'm green with envy at the alluring model's ability to make the bejewelled peekaboo bralet bodice look sexy, not slutty.
MING-NA WEN (C)
Premiere of Avengers: Age of Ultron in Los Angeles
Outfit: Not known
Draping a pseudo-cape over oneself at a Marvel superhero movie premiere is just desperate. Melinda May, you're better than that.
SHAILENE WOODLEY (C)
MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles
Top, pants and boots: Isabel Marant
The good? Legs for days. The bad and the ugly? The mix of striped tee, high-waisted patterned pants and buckled boots. Divergent in the worst way possible.
KYLIE MINOGUE (D-)
American Foundation for Aids Research fundraising gala in Sao Paulo
Dress: Jean Paul Gaultier
The poor woman doesn't have a mirror or a friend. As a shortie myself, attempting what's designed for six-feet-tall supermodels is just a disaster waiting to happen. Minimum height requirement aside, this is one hot mess of a Frankendress!
RIHANNA (F)
Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival Indio, California
Coat: Marques'Almeida
Shoes: Dr. Martens
How many muppets died for this?! Sure, it's Coachella, the perfect excuse for throwing on the ugliest thing in your closet, breaking all the rules and getting away with it. But a full-length lilac faux fur coat and neon pink boots for a party in the Californian heat? Not this time, RiRi.
WHO WORE IT BETTER?
FELICITY JONES (Top)
Academy Awards nominees luncheon in Los Angeles, Feb 2
Dress: Christian Dior
Shoes: Jimmy Choo
V
JAIME KING (Above)
Premiere of Dior & I in Los Angeles, April 15
Dress, clutch and boots: Christian Dior
Didn't like it then, don't like it now. Still, I've got to deliver a verdict, no matter what. This odd half-sequined turtleneck get-up from Dior was one of the low points of Jones' awards season run. At least King breathes some life into her version. Its burgundy and silver colour combination is less depressing than Jones' dull green and navy. The fact that King is pregnant and still rocking thigh-high patent boots deserves a high-five.
MOST IMPROVED
LINDA CARDELLINI
Bloodline premiere in New York City, March 3
Dress: Not known
Premiere of Avengers: Age of Ultron in Los Angeles, April 13
Dress: Yanina Couture
Velma "Scooby-Doo" Dinkley cleans up nice, doesn't she? Here's proof that fashion can be turned into your very own instant time machine. Cardellini is 39 years old. The first dress adds 10 years, the second one takes away 10 years. As to which sartorial direction she should be heading in henceforth, it's basically down to math and common sense, no?
HONOURABLE MAN-TION
CHRIS HEMSWORTH
Premiere of Avengers: Age of Ultron in Los Angeles
Suit: Salvatore Ferragamo
Superhero stud alert! Sans Thor's long blond locks, the reigning Sexiest Man Alive is looking more and more like Brad Pitt in the latter's dreamy heyday. His crisp greyish checked ensemble isn't too shabby either. Is the earth moving for you too?
"We all avoided retro for years because it would be like if you played a cop on TV and you went to a premiere dressed as a cop."
