Mad Max: Fury Road isn't just for the guys

What a lovely day... Mad Max: Fury Road is finally on its way.

It's been 30 years since we last saw Mel Gibson's macho road warrior named Max Rockatansky walked the Earth in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985.

Mad Max: Fury Road is the fourth instalment with Tom Hardy taking over the lead as Max.

For those who have watched the earlier Mad Max films will be glad to know that director George Miller has kept the crazy car chases, daring stunts, violence and that dry, brown post-apocalyptic world.

“I think of action movies as a kind of visual music, and Fury Road is somewhere between a wild rock concert and an opera,” Miller commented.

“I want to sweep the audience out of their seats and into an intense, rambunctious ride, and along the way you get to know who these characters are and the events that led up to this story.”

The Australian director certainly delivered his promise, as judging from the trailers released online, Fury Road is going to be one explosive and rambunctious ride.

But before you think Fury Road is purely a testosterone-charged action flick, think again.

Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa is in the driver's seat as much as Max is the star of the show.

We bet her road warrior character will go down in movie history as one of the most kick-ass female warriors ever -- just like Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley in Alien.

Fury Road revolves around Furiosa, who has been plotting her revenge against the evil warlord Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) for years.

Furiosa takes along with her Immortan Joe's prized possessions – five young ladies (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Zoë Kravitz, Riley Keough, Abbey Lee, and Courtney Eaton) kidnapped to breed future fighters  and makes her escape across the wasteland.

Naturally, the baddies go after the ladies and Max becomes their reluctant ally.

It's definitely girl power all the way. In fact, Miller enlisted the help from activist, feminist icon, and Vagina Monologues author Eve Ensler to make sure his ladies are empowered survivors and not hapless victims.

So there you have it, a perfect date movie that tick all the right boxes for both the guys and the gals.

Mad Max: Fury Road opens here May 14.

Oh, another plus point for the girls: Nicholas Hoult is in the movie too.

Though he isn't looking his usual dapper self.
