Joker Leto pranks New York Comic-Con

Jared Leto pulled the best prank at the New York Comic-Con, possibly inspired by his Joker character in Suicide Squad.

It was not April Fools' Day but it didn't stop Jared Leto from pulling a trick on the comics-loving public.

The US actor plays Joker in the upcoming Suicide Squad and he's very much in the mood for pranks.

He donned a simple if startling disguise -- a mandrill mask -- at the recent New York Comic-Con and walked around unrecognised

The best part was that he posed for photographs next to fans who had dressed up as characters from the Batman comics, in particular fans dressed as his version of Joker or co-star Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. All of them were completely oblivious that they were merely inches away from the real Joker.

As you might be able to see, the nostrils acted as eyeholes.

The 43-year-old Oscar winner also posted photos of cosplayers on Snapchat dressed up as other DC Comics heroes such as Batman, which he labelled "My Enemy My Friend".

For one Harley Quinn cosplayer, holding a sign that read "#dreamingofJoker Have you seen him?", it may be even more galling when she realises just how close she actually was to seeing him.

Leto is living up to the reputation of being a trickster, having played several pranks on his Suicide Squad co-stars.

For instance, he sent Margot Robbie a love letter in a box with a live rat in it.

To Will Smith, who plays Deadshot in the action flick, he sent bullets.

This comic convention stunt saw Leto following the footsteps of actors like Bryan Cranston (who wore a mask of his Breaking Bad character Walter White) and Daniel Radcliffe and Andrew Garfield (both cosplayed as Spider-Man) who have taken the opportunity to hide in plain sight to walk around the conventions like any other attendee.

Leto posted a number of pictures to his social media feeds, some relishing his anonymity with captions like "He had no idea".

His last note on Snapchat cheekily taunted.

Suicide Squad opens here on Aug 4 next year.
