Ryan Gosling's cereal tribute

On May 4, Ryan Gosling finally ate some cereal.

So what's the big deal?

It was gesture, posted to a social media platform, that served as a tribute to a man whose life Gosling said he felt "lucky to have been a part of".

That man was Ryan McHenry. In 2013, McHenry created a series of Vines called Ryan Gosling Won't Eat His Cereal.

In the six second long videos, McHenry filmed himself (well, his hand) offering a spoonful of cereal to various onscreen incarnations of Gosling.

The videos, and the subsequent compilations went viral for the Scot. One reason was the timing. As the hand cautiously approached Gosling's mouth, it coincided with the actor reacting in a way that made him look like he was petulantly refusing the cereal.

The videos even nabbed McHenry an award.

In April, Ryan the Canadian sex-symbol made it known he was aware of Ryan the Edinburgh College of Art graduate.

The two exchanged some playful banter on Twitter.

Sadly, McHenry had spent the past two years battling osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer.

He died on Sunday (May 3) aged 27.

There have been many tributes to the meme-maker.

One of the most moving came from Gosling himself.

The star of the McHenry's videos uploaded a Vine of himself silently raising a spoon in acknowledgement before tucking into a mouthful of cereal.

As of Wednesday night, Gosling's Vine has been looped close to 29 million times and received over 253,000 likes.

The Drive star also took to the Twitter site to pay a heartfelt tribute to McHenry.

Daily Mail reported that a friend of McHenry said:  'It’s the most fitting send-off any of his friends or family could have hoped for. It was something he had always talked about."
