What egos? Only mine, says Joss Whedon
Reporting from Seoul
If you want any advice on dealing with egos, ask Joss Whedon.
After all, the 50-year-old director has at least 10 stars under his wing.
Earth's mightiest heroes (and some villains too).
"I was first told that I'd be getting 10 to 11 movie stars in a room," Whedon said.
"But I never got them. I got 10 to 11 actors."
Expanding on the on-set camaraderie, Whedon explained:
"When they come to the set, they just want to help each other, they just want to make the scene work."
He was, of course, referring to his star-studded Avengers: Age Of Ultron cast comprising Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, and Jeremy Renner, to name a few.
Downey, Evans and Ruffalo were with the director for the Press Conference in Seoul on Friday (April 17).
"A lot of people had asked me how do I deal with egos?
"Actually, egos don't really exist, except for mine!" he said, laughing.
"It's a really happy, fun, safe set. I wish I could tell you horror stories but my stories are all about these guys making me laugh."
He added that his main focus for the sequel to his 2012 hit, which opens here April 23, was simply "to do a better film than the first one".
A feat easier said than done.
"To spend more time with these characters, to build bigger, more exciting action pieces while letting you find out more about these characters... and let these guys have more fun together."
Letting everyone have fun comes with a price tag.
The first film cemented Marvel's grip on the superhero movie genre, finally proving that different characters with their own franchises can "play" together.
It proved Whedon a master of the ensemble drama.
And yet, he still has fears for the sequel.
His biggest fear? That he has not done enough for Age Of Ultron.
"I’m still making the movie in my head. I’m still thinking of what else I can fix."
He shared: "My biggest fear would be that people came away from the movie thinking the movie is just nice.
"I never want to make something people like. I only want to make films people love."
Whedon is a man with a mission.
"This is my last Avengers movie, so that’s why I got it get it right."
