Two sides to the Force

With the arrival of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in cinemas here tomorrow, the battle between the light and dark sides is heating up like never before. Infographics journalists BILLY KER and ELRAD CHOY pit some of the most iconic Jedi and Sith against one other (Spoiler free)

A Jedi Council member and a general during the Clone Wars, he was executed by his own forces under Order 66.

He escaped Order 66 and went into hiding, changing his identity to Kanan Jarrus. He met young Ezra Bridger, who joined him in leading their own rebel group against the Empire.

An amphibious Jedi Master and member of the Jedi Council, Fisto was one of the Jedi Masters assigned to arrest Palpatine. He did not survive the encounter.

 

He acquired considerable knowledge in the field of midi-chlorian manipulation, unlocking the secret of immortality. He was ultimately betrayed and murdered by his own apprentice.

Grand Inquisitor was a highly ranked member of the Galactic Empire. His role was to eliminate Jedi who survived Order 66. He was defeated by Kanan Jarrus.

He was Darth Maul's brother and became a Sith Lord during the Clone Wars. Opress was defeated in battle by Darth Sidious.

Sidious' Grand Army fought the Separatists in the Clone Wars. Victorious, he turned the Republic into the Empire. Jedi were branded traitors and executed under Order 66. He was killed by Darth Vader when he tried to murder Luke Skywalker.

Formerly known as Anakin Skywalker, he was Palpatine's right-hand man and enforcer. He oversaw the construction of the Death Star. He eventually turned away from the dark side to save his son and kill Emperor Palpatine.

Obsessed with Darth Vader, he is believed to have modelled his appearance and behaviour after him. His identity and purpose is still a mystery, but he vows to finish what Vader started.

The sole survivor of the destruction of the Sith by the Jedi Order, Bane reformed the Sith and created the "Rule of Two", mandating that there can only be two Sith - a Master and an apprentice - at any given time. Bane was defeated by a Jedi, but his rule

continued.

A Dathomirian female who, at various points throughout her life, was a Jedi Padawan, a Sith apprentice, a Nightsister and a bounty hunter. She fell in love with Jedi Master Quinlan Vos and died protecting him.

Darth Maul was tasked by Darth Sidious to track down Queen Amidala.

Obi-Wan Kenobi almost defeated him in battle. He survived and went into exile. During the Clone Wars, he was found by his brother Savage Opress and together, they sought revenge against Obi-Wan.

A cyborg that led the Separatist Droid Army under Count Dooku's command. He was defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi, who shot him in the heart.

The most senior member of the Jedi Council aside from Yoda. While trying to arrest Emperor Palpatine, his hand was cut off by Anakin Skywalker and he was thrown from a building to his death by Palpatine.

A former Jedi Master who fell to the dark side after becoming disillusioned with the corrupt government. He led the Separatist Alliance throughout the Clone Wars and was killed by Anakin at Palpatine's instigation.

The Jedi who discovered Anakin, claiming he was the chosen one. He was mortally wounded by Darth Maul and it was his dying wish to see Anakin trained in the way of the Force.

Ahsoka was wrongfully accused of a bombing incident and barred from the Jedi Order. Years later, she aided in the rebellion against the Empire.

Son of Anakin and twin brother of Leia, Luke became a hero of the rebellion. He later faced his father, who had become Darth Vader, and helped him find redemption.

Finn served as a Stormtrooper for the First Order. He struggled to escape his past and became guided by his conscience towards a heroic path.

He grew up as a slave and was discovered by Qui-Gon Jinn. A gifted Jedi, he was seduced to the dark side. In a fit of anger, he caused his wife's death. After he was mutilated in a duel with Obi-Wan, he took the mantle of Darth Vader.

The most senior member of the Jedi Council.

Although elderly, Yoda fought as a general in the Clone Wars. After his defeat against Darth Sidious, he went into hiding on Dagobah, only to meet and train Luke years later.

A Jedi with a dash of derring-do, Obi-Wan served as a general in the Clone Wars. But he was helpless against his friend and pupil Anakin turning to the dark side. Left with no choice, he fought and defeated Anakin.
