Nothing Compares 2 U

THE ARTIST

Sinead O'Connor

THE LYRICS

It's been seven hours and fifteen days/Since you took your love away/I go out every night and sleep all day/Since you took your love away

THE RESULTS

It was written and recorded first by US singer-songwriter Prince for his side project The Family. O'Connor then recorded Nothing Compares 2 U

for her second album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got.

It topped charts in numerous countries including the US, UK, Sweden and Australia.

Equally iconic was its music video which focuses on O'Connor's heart-breaking facial expression as she sings to the camera, two drops of tears dolling down her cheeks.

At the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards, the video bagged Video of the Year, Best Female Video and Best Post-Modern Video.

THAT WAS THEN...

The Irish singer-songwriter, who has released 10 albums to date, frequently made headlines.

She was involved in a fist fight with Princein the early 90s because he hated her swearing during interviews.

She is a vocal critic of the Catholic church and was ordained a priest in 1999 by a Latin Tridentine church.

In 2013, she infamously slammed US pop star Miley Cyrus in a series of open letters, the first a concerned note that Cyrus was being "pimped" by the music industry.

To top it all off, she got married four times and has four children from various relationships.

THIS IS NOW...

O'Connor, 48, is slated to perform a few shows in Germany, Ireland, Belgium, Norway and Canada in the coming months.

But she is done with Nothing Compares 2 U.

Last month, she posted on Facebook that the time has come for her to "cease singing" the song which she no longer emotionally identifies with and doing so would be "lying" to her fans.

She is also writing her autobiography.

"It's written like a diary, as if it's happening now and it's all music-based. There will be the odd personal thing but I'm not writing about my family, or my boyfriends, there'll be none of that," she said on The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on Irish radio station Today FM.
