18 people arrested in Geylang for immigration offences
Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers arrested 18 people on Thursday (Jan 8) during an operation in Geylang.
The 18 suspects – 17 men and one woman – are aged between 35 and 51.
The offenders from China and Vietnam had overstayed in Singapore.
Investigations against suspects are ongoing.
Those found guilty of overstaying or illegal entry can be jailed for up to six months and caned at least three times.
Those found guilty of illegal departure can be fined up to $2,000 and/or jailed for up to six months.
In a press release on Thursday, the ICA advised homeowners to "exercise due diligence in checking the status of their prospective foreign tenants to ensure that their status in Singapore is legal".
Those who wish to rent their premises to foreigners are required to conduct the following checks:
- Check the person's original immigration/work pass.
- Cross check the particulars on the person's pass against the particulars on the person's original passport.
- Verify the validity of the person's pass by checking with the issuing authority.

- Visit Pass
Passes issued by Ministry of Manpower:
- Work Permit
- S Pass
- Employment Pass
- Dependant's Pass
