Abandoned at birth, hospital boy celebrates 5th birthday
A boy who was raised in the maternity wards of a hospital in southern China celebrated turning five last month — in the same hospital that his parents left him at.
Doctors named him Junming.
Abandoned since birth, he has lived at the hospital ever since, the People's Daily Online reported.
Staff and nurses, whom he affectionately call "mum", celebrated his birthday with him on Sept 21.
Though both of Junming's parents are still alive and in touch with him, they refuse to take him home.
No heartbeat
His birth mother, Bu Yuhong, had an emergency delivery at the hospital's maternity ward of the hospital but complications meant Junming was not breathing and did not have a heartbeat when born.
Doctors were able to revive the boy within five minutes and he was pronounced healthy.
However, his mother insisted that the boy had cerebral palsy and refused to take her child home or pay for his medical care, Mail Online said.
He has lived at the hospital ever since, cared for by the doctors and nurses there while the institution covers his clothes and food.
The medical staff even hired a carer just to take care of the boy.
To date, he has had about 100 different "hospital mums".
Other parents who came across his story also donated for his care.
Junming's mother, who still has full control of his legal rights, attended the celebration with the grandparents.
For his birthday, Junming's wish was to be able to go to school.
