About the case

Giselle Shi Jia Wei, 25, pleaded guilty on Oct 2 to attempted culpable homicide.

She admitted to stabbing her ex-girlfriend, Miss Ummul Qurratu 'Ain Abdul Rahman, 22, twice in the chest on July 22, 2012, in the Golden Star Hotel in Geylang.

They had a tumultuous relationship which started in July 2011 and lasted for about a year.

The day before the attack, Shi called Miss Ummul and asked to meet. They had supper in a Geylang coffee shop before checking into the hotel at Geylang Lorong 8.

On July 22, they woke up in the afternoon and had sex. While Miss Ummul was lying in bed and watching television, Shi asked if they could resume their relationship.

Miss Ummul said no.

Shi took out a knife from her bag and stabbed her ex-girlfriend twice in the chest. One of the stabs fractured Miss Ummul's breastbone and punctured the wall of her heart.

Miss Ummul managed to escape from the room where a couple in the corridor helped her and called the police.

Shi could have been jailed for up to 15 years and fined for attempted culpable homicide.
