About the case

He was jailed and caned in 2013 for offences including the molest of his niece who was under 14 years of age.

But this failed to deter him from committing a similar offence just six months after his release from prison.

The 49-year-old man was sentenced yesterday to five years' corrective training and given two strokes of the cane for stealing from his mother and molesting the niece's 14-year-old friend.

On June 17 last year, he stole $500 from his 67-year-old mother's handbag while she was sleeping in their one-room rental flat near Kallang.

The niece lives with them.

Last November, he was asleep in the flat when her friend went there at around midnight for a sleepover.

The man, who had earlier consumed five cans of beer, woke up at 6am and saw the friend sound asleep.

He became sexually aroused when he noticed that she was wearing a pair of shorts and a sleeveless T-shirt.

She did not wake up when he gently squeezed her right buttock.

Emboldened by this, he gave her a hard squeeze, causing her to wake up with a start.

The girl called the police who later arrested the man.

For molest, he could have been jailed up to two years, fined and/or caned.

For theft, he could have been jailed up to seven years and fined.
