ABOUT THE CASE

On the night of Feb 17, 2008, two Chinese nationals, Mr Cao Ruyin and Mr Wu Jun, were walking along Geylang Drive when they were set upon by Jabing Kho and his accomplice, Galing Kujat.

Kho struck Mr Cao on the head with a tree branch and Galing saw their 40-year-old victim's head crack open.

Mr Cao, who was robbed of his mobile phone, died from serious injuries to his brain six days later, while Mr Wu escaped with minor injuries.

Galing was originally convicted of murder and given the death sentence.

Following an appeal in 2011, he was, instead, convicted of robbery with hurt.

Galing, whose job was to load oil onto ships, was later sentenced to 18½ years' jail and 19 strokes of the cane.
