Ambulance taking pregnant teen to M'sian hospital crashes

This article is more than 12 months old

An ambulance that was rushing a heavily-pregnant teen to hospital from Cameron Highlands to Ipoh crashed into a drain recently.

After the accident, Dalia Alia, 19, was ferried by passersby to the hospital but she delivered a stillborn baby hours later.

Her husband, Ahmad Nazri Zainul Kharib, 26, said it was raining heavily and the driver lost control of the ambulance.

It crashed into the drain along the 28km mark of the Simpang Pulai-Cameron Highlands road.

“My wife was knocked off the stretcher by the impact,” he told The Star. “Some bystanders then sent us to the hospital in Ipoh.”

Stillborn

A doctor delivered the baby but it was stillborn.

“We were shocked. The doctor told us the baby may have suffocated,” said Ahmad Nazri, who lives with his wife in Cameron Highlands.

Ahmad Nazri said he had taken his eight-month pregnant wife to the Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom Hospital in Tanah Rata at about 12pm on Sept 1 after she went into labour.

“After waiting there for a few hours, the doctor claimed Dalia needed to be transferred to the hospital in Ipoh and she was put into the ambulance at about 4.30pm,” he said.

He said a post-mortem was done, but the cause of death could not be determined.
