Aussie woman caught with 1.5kg of drugs at KL airport faces death penalty
An Australian woman faces the possibility of a death penalty after being caught with 1.5kg of drugs in her bag at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
KLIA Customs director Chik Omar Chik Lim said the unnamed mother-of-four arrived at the airport on Dec 7 at about 5pm from Shanghai and was to have taken a connecting flight to Melbourne.
"While passing through the scanner at the arrival hall, we found the syabu wrapped in plastic and stashed inside a secret compartment in her travel bag," he said.
"She was later handed to the police for questioning."
Syabu is also known as methamphetamine or Ice.
Drug mules
The drugs are worth about RM275,000 (S$103,000), said the director.
The 51-year-old woman is expected to be charged on Monday.
The Australian faces the mandatory death sentence if convicted under the Dangerous Drugs Act.
Malaysia's Customs Department has seized over RM54 million worth of drugs, brought in by mules through KLIA and KLIA2, this year alone.
