A body was found at East Coast Park beach yesterday morning, shocking beach-goers and staff working in shops nearby.

Shin Min Daily News reported that it was the body of a 61-year-old man who had fallen into the sea before he was washed ashore later.

The corpse was found about 5m away from the shoreline, near carpark C2.

The man was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene, a police spokesman said.

A Singapore Civil Defence Force spokesman said the body could have been in the water for some time based on its condition.

A blue tent was placed over the bodyeven as several curious onlookers were gathering at the scene.

The beach was cordoned off by the police until the body was removed.

A 48-year-old cashier who worked at a convenience store nearby said it was 8am when she saw the body and she was shocked at the sight.

A food stall vendor said the part of the beach where the body was found is popular with swimmers and fishermen.

This is because no camping is allowed in the area, he added.

The police have classified it as a case of unnatural death and are investigating.
