Brother suggested she become prostitute

Jane was a prostitute working for Malcolm Graham Head and his girlfriend, Veronica Patricia Rio.

Last March, she was engaged for her services by French national Dominguez Didier Moise, at his home.

The two got into an argument when Mr Moise, 53, asked to perform anal sex on Jane and she refused.

Fearing that Mr Moise would force himself on her, Jane, who was then 23, excused herself to the bedroom toilet. Using her mobile phone, she called Head for help.

BROKEN JAW

When Head, Rio, her brother, 20, and her childhood friend Nur Azilah Ithnin, 21, rushed over, Jane let them into the house.

The group savagely beat up Mr Moise, leaving him with multiple wounds, including a broken jaw and a black eye.

Jane's lawyer, Mr Amarick Gill, said in mitigation that she had thought it was only Head and Rio at the door.

Jane had also slapped Mr Moise when he called her a "bitch".

Mr Gill said that in Jane's mind, Mr Moise was a stranger who was capable of sodomising her.

The lawyer also pointed out Jane's past - how she had been raped as a 12-year-old by her father and had to abort a child at that age. She was also placed in a girl's home.

Said Mr Gill: "(Jane) has done wrong but in the overall scheme of things, she was most certainly a victim herself and at an early age, not given a fair shot at life. She was abused by the very own person ordained by life to protect her. Thereafter, everything spiralled downhill."

It was also revealed that her brother was the one who suggested that she become a prostitute to make money.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Winston Man said Jane's culpability was limited as she was not involved in the scuffle with the victim.

In sentencing, District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim told Jane: "I have read your mitigation statement and have considered your past carefully... But you are responsible for bringing the attackers into the apartment."

Jane could have been jailed for up to two years and fined $5,000 for assault.
