Despite his challenges, he still cares for others

Mr John Low's ability to remain a pillar of support for his family earned praise from Ms Eleen Lim, a senior social worker at KK Women's and Children's Hospital.

Ms Lim, who nominated him for the Singapore Health Inspirational Patient and Caregiver Award, said: "Mr Low has always been a cooperative and understanding parent.

"He is humble in his approach and is always appreciative of the help he gets.

"Despite the challenging situation that he faces in life, he never fails to show care and concern towards the staff in our department, making it a pleasure for us to interact with him."

The Singapore Health Inspirational Patient and Caregiver Award was launched in 2010 to pay tribute to patients and caregivers who have shown courage, resilience and patience.

It is organised by the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre.

Two new categories were introduced this year: One, the Inspirational Patient Volunteers award, recognises patients who have improved the lives of fellow patients through volunteerism.

The other, the Inspirational Clinical Trial Patients award, acknowledges patients who have volunteered for clinical trials and studies to bring about better treatment options for others.

This year's awards saw a total of 32 recipients - 23 patients and nine caregivers, including Mr Low.

Each winner went home with $250 in gift vouchers and a plaque.
