Does crime pay? Shameless UK shoplifter says her 'unbelievably hard' career netted $4.2m

This article is more than 12 months old

She is a mother of six who has never held a regular job.

But don't tell Kim Farry to her face that she's a bum - she'll take offence.

The 54-year-old has been labelled Britain's most shameless shoplifter after she claimed in the Sunday People newspaper that her life of crime was "unbelievably hard", even though she's made nearly £2 (S$4.2) million from it.

Farry, who lives in public housing and picks up over $1,100 a month in unemployment benefits, said:

"I’m not ashamed of what I’ve done, I’m proud. I was untouchable. I made millions and had a life most normal people can only dream of.

“It really annoys me when people say I’ve never had a job because I worked at my business non-stop for over four decades.

"It just happens that my business was shoplifting.”

Lavish lifestyle

While she has stopped her criminal lifestyle to look after her youngest daughter, 14-year-old Paris, Farry has become so used to her ill-gotten riches that she claims she will resort to stealing again if she doesn't receive more welfare from the British government.

Incredibly, she believes that less welfare encourages more crime.

She said: "I refuse to believe that anyone can live on the money provided by the Government in benefits.

"There’s no way I can maintain my lifestyle or anything close to it. The Government is living in denial if it thinks people are going to live on benefits and not do everything they can to top it up, illegal or not."

And that's not all.

She threatens to make a 'comeback' of sorts one day.

She added:

"I don’t want to but I know that if my TV breaks tomorrow or I can’t pay my phone bill or buy food, I will be back out there shoplifting."
