German MP admits to crystal meth use

This article is more than 12 months old

A German MP admitted on Wednesday that he took crystal meth.

His excuse? Michael Hartmann's lawyer said the Berlin lawmaker consumed the drug to improve his performance at work.

The 51-year-old, who is the interior policy expert for the Social Democrats party(SPD), said that he only bought a small quantity and used the drug for around a month in 2013.

He remains a member of parliament but has since stepped as the party's parliamentary spokesperson for interior affairs.

Police searched his home in Berlin last week after observing him buying the drug.

They did not find any illicit substances but they are now investigating the case.

It should also be noted that Hartmann has previously spoken out against using cannabis.

Of course, Hartmann's not the only politician who has been caught taking drugs.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford returned to the City Council this week after two months in rehab for drug and alcohol abuse.
