German student falls to death while hiking in Langkawi

A 24-year-old German student fell to his death while hiking with three friends near Telaga Tujuh in Langkawi.

Alexzande Anton Michael, a student at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Cyberjaya, died from internal injuries after falling into a 76m-deep ravine at about 3.15pm on Saturday (Oct 18).

According to the student's friends, he was attempting to take photographs in the area, known for its waterfall, when he slipped and fell into the ravine, said Langkawi OCPD Supt Harith Kam Abdullah.

He added that the hiking trail was slippery due to heavy rain in the area at the time.

“We reached the scene at 3.50pm and managed to retrieve the body from the ravine about an hour later. The body has since been sent to the Langkawi Hospital for a post-mortem,” said Langkawi Fire and Rescue Department officer Asst Supt Hassan.

Authorities said the German embassy has been informed.
