Google fined S$2,500 for displaying cleavage on Street View
A Canadian woman has successfully sued Google for displaying her cleavage on Street View and the ruling stated that her privacy had been breached.
Google ended up being fined US$2,000 (S$2,500).
Street View is Google's mapping service, which allows users to browse streets and buildings at ground level in 360-degree viewing mode. The images were captured by vehicles like the one above, which were fitted with special cameras.
Maria Pia Grillo claimed that her privacy had been disrespected (even though she was in public and sitting on the steps of her house).
A Canadian newspaper, Le Journal De Montreal managed to find the image and did a before and after shot of the view from Google Street View..
"In addition to malicious comments and humiliation she suffered at work, the plaintiff, in particular, has experienced a significant loss of personal modesty and dignity." - Judge Alain Breault
Initially, Grillo had demanded US$45,000 in damages, complaining about "mockeries, derisions, disrespectful and sexually related comments in relation to the photographs," due to the fact that she was identified using her house and car number plate, despite her face having been blurred.
The images were taken in March 2009 before it was published on their site in October that same year.
Google hasn't commented on the ruling at the time of publication (2pm, Nov 2).
