Leader in the public and private sectors

Mr Bernard Chen was the deputy secretary of the Ministry of Finance (Development) until 1977, when he stood for a by-election at the Radin Mas constituency.

Mr Chen, then 35, beat Workers' Party secretary general J.B. Jeyaretnam, winning 12,053 votes to his 5,021 votes.

Ten days later, he was appointed Minister of State for Defence, a position he held from May 1977 to April 1981.

He joined F&N in 1982, staying for nearly 10 years before joining telco equipment supplier Intraco Limited, a position he held until 2000.

During this time, he was also MP for Clementi, Pasir Panjang GRC, Brickworks GRC and West Coast GRC, before he finally left politics in 2001.

From 1977 to 1990, Mr Chen was chairman of NTUC Income's board of directors; from 1996 to 2005, he was director of DBS.

Mr Chen also became a director of DBS Group Holdings in 1999 before retiring in 2005.
