Learn CPR in nine easy steps (to the beat of Stayin' Alive)

This article is more than 12 months old

A video went viral of a man performing Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on a jogger who collapsed on Woodlands Drive 64.

The man performing CPR turned out to be an off-duty SCDF paramedic. The jogger is in a stable condition but a paramedic is not always going to be passing by.

Would you know what to do in that situation?

Here are a nine tips from the Singapore Civil Defence website you may find useful if you have never done a course in CPR.  Grab the booklet HERE. .

Step 1 is to tap the casualty on the shoulders and try to get his attention by shouting.

Step 2 is that if he does not respond, call 995 for an ambulance.

If others are there, don't let them stand there gawking. Get them to call 995 while you get to the business of lifesaving.

The rest is as follows, though it's worth noting this technique is just for a suspected cardiac arrest.

A handy tune to remember for chest compressions is Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees.

According to the British Hear Foundation, if you carry out CPR to the beat of the song, you should be on the right track.

In 2011, they ran a campaign on Hands Only CPR (no mouth-to mouth) starring Vinnie Jones

Just keep in mind that our emergency number for an ambulance is 995, not 999.
