Police have arrested the gunman who killed three Muslim students on Tuesday in their home in the town of Chapel Hill in North Carolina, US.

Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, is being held in Durham County Jail on three counts of first-degree murder, local media reported.

The victims were Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, his wife Yusor Abu-Salha, 21, and her sister Razan Abu-Salha, 19.

Hicks turned himself in after the shooting at Finley Forest Condominiums, just outside the University of North Carolina (UNC) campus. The complex is home to many graduate students.

Reports said Mr Barakat was a second-year dentistry student at UNC, while his wife was planning to enroll at UNC dental school this year.

The couple got married in December last year.

Miss Razan Abu-Salha was a student at North Carolina State University, according to the UNC university newspaper, the Daily Tar Heel.

A Facebook community named Our Three Winners has been set up for the three students.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive for the attack.

It confirmed the three deaths on its website and said the department is "questioning a person of interest in the crime and has reason to believe that there is no ongoing threat to the public".
