Man arrested for trying to bribe Singapore police with cigarettes
A 44-year-old man who was caught fighting near Bartley Rd attempted to bribe two police officers by offering them two unopened packets of cigarettes.
The bribe was rejected and the man was arrested for affray and attempting to bribe the officers, stated a police press release.
The incident happened at Kim Chuan Road, off Hougang Avenue 3, at around 4.40pm on Sunday.
Responding to a report of fighting, police voluntary special constable corporal Jeremy Koh and special constable sergeant Allan Tay arrived at the scene and proceeded to interview two suspects, aged 40 and 44.
It was during the interview that the older suspect tried to bribe the two officers.
The other suspect was arrested for affray. To commit affray is to disturb the public peace by fighting in a public place.
Both men will be charged in court on Tuesday. If found guilty of affray, they can be jailed for up to a year and/or fined up to $5,000.
The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau will also be investigating the 44-year-old suspect for the bribery attempt.
