Man reveals he was awake during 12-year coma but was unable to tell anyone

This article is more than 12 months old

At the age of 12, Martin Pistorius was struck down by meningitis that resulted in him slipping into a coma

But two years into his vegetative state, Mr Pistorius revealed that he woke up one day, but was unable to tell anyone due to his paralytic state.

He recalls almost every incident that happened during his 12 years being trapped in his unresponsive body.

The South African remembers his parents bathing and feeding him to hearing that he was predicted to die soon.

"I was there, not from the very beginning, but about two years into my vegetative state I began to wake up. I was aware of everything, just like any normal person," Mr Pistorius told NPR.

"Everyone was so used to me not being there that they didn't notice when I began to be present again.

"The stark reality hit me that I was going to spend the rest of my life like that – totally alone."

Mr Pistorius, now 39, said both his brain and body began to fully function when he turned 24.

The vivid details of Mr Pistorius' story has been published in a book titled, Ghost Boy: My Escape From a Life Locked Inside My Own Body.
