Miss Universe Thailand gives up crown after overwhelming criticism
Miss Universe Thailand tearfully gave up her crown yesterday after public criticism of her victory became too overwhelming.
Thai netizens had villified Weluree "Fai" Ditsayabut,22, after she was perceived to have made inappropriate remarks on social media about pro-government protestors.
She had written on a Facebook post last November: "I am so angry at all these evil activists. They should all be executed." Her post resurfaced after she won the May 17.
Thais had also criticised her "chubby" appearance.
Ditsayabut, an actress, said that the controversy surrounding her had caused her mother to lose sleep.
"At first, my family was happy for me when I was crowned. But there's no more happiness following waves of criticism from the society."
Meanwhile, the organisers of Miss Universe Thailand told reporters they will review social media when screening and selecting contestants in the future.
