More police officers, volunteers, CCTVs to deter crime
A system that boosts the police presence in neighbourhoods has been set up islandwide.
As part of a community policing system, police officers and volunteers are pounding the beat more frequently, and more closed-circuit television cameras have been installed in Housing Board estates.
The Community Policing System (Cops) started in 2012 and has been introduced in all 35 Neighbourhood Police Posts (NPPs) islandwide.
A community event was organised by the police in Marine Parade yesterday to mark the full roll-out of the system.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Alvin Moh told reporters that CCTV cameras have been installed in more than 4,400 HDB blocks and carparks.
The police are on track to install cameras in all 10,000 HDB blocks and carparks by the end of next year, he added.
Grassroots leader David Siow, 47, an engineer who has been doing patrols around Marine Crescent Gardens for 15 years, said: "There are fewer loan-shark harassment cases in my neighbourhood.
"I think this is because of the frequent patrols done by volunteers and police officers."
The event was attended by Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who spoke about the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew's contributions to the police force, The Straits Times reported on its website.
