M'sian PM's step-grandmother believed to have been on MH17

Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak's step-grandmother is believed to be one of the the Malaysians who died aboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which was shot down in Easter Ukraine on Thursday night.

Puan Sri Siti Amirah, 83, was traveling alone on her way back to Jogjakarta, Indonesia from Amsterdam. She was supposed to transit at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, according to a spokesman for the family, Datin Dr Faridah Abdullah.

According to The Star Online, she was once married to Najib's grandfather, Tan Sri Mohammad Noah Omar, who died in 1990.

Dr Faridah said that Siti had traveled to Amsterdam to holiday with her only daughter from her first marriage.

Her daughter was supposed to have followed her mother back to Indonesia but did not get on the same flight as her.

They were planning to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Jogjakarta.
