Mum allegedly dumps day-old baby in neighbour's trash bin

This article is more than 12 months old

Why would a mother dump her day-old newborn in the bin?

That's what Utah woman, Alicia Marie Englert did last month.

She told police she was afraid to tell her parents about the pregnancy. Hopefully, the baby girl's death would solve her problems, the 23-year-old added.

Her baby had not received any food or medical care then.

Neighbour Adora Nemitz thought the baby's cries were a cat mewing. "I heard a sound like a cat... and I saw the baby with the umbilical cord - still breathing. And I just, I didn't talk. I just (was) shocked."

The baby was airlifted to a hospital in Salt Lake City, in critical condition and placed on a ventilator.

Englert was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder, who oversees the Unified Police Department, said at a news conference that there were no visible injuries to the child.

There was no information about the child's father.

"We had a young lady make a very, very terrible decision," Winder said.

Family and neighbours came out in Englert's defence. Her father said she's not mentally capable of understanding what happened.

He told ABC 4 Utah his daughter has autism and Aspergers - she probably didn't even know she was pregnant or understand what's going on.

"She doesn't realise that she's there, she's probably scared half to death," he said.

"I'm the one who got the baby out of the garbage can; I didn't know I was holding my granddaughter."

Neighbour Stephanie Cook called the mother "a good girl", adding that both the family and the woman are probably struggling to figure what to do now.
