M'sia condo residents given 3 weeks to reclaim stolen underwear

If your bra and panties were stolen by a man with an underwear fetish, would you want them back?

Residents at two condominium blocks in George Town, Penang have been given until the end of next week to reclaim their stolen lingerie, which were recovered when the thief was nabbed.

The thief was caught red-handed on June 28 after a female resident set a trap.

The woman hung a red bra near her wet kitchen grill facing the common corridor.

A security guard, who was lying in wait, saw another resident stealing the bra.

The guard followed the 32-year-old man back to his unit, where more than 1,000 stolen undergarments were later found.

Too shy to reclaim items

The thief is believed to have started stealing from fellow residents more than a year ago.

Broomstick handles, long staves, extendable poles and wire clothes hangers reshaped into hooks were found in his rented room. He is believed to have used these items to commit the crimes.

The stolen undergarments were initially displayed outside the management office for owners to reclaim them before being taken down last Friday (July 3).

Less than 10 per cent of the items have been claimed so far.

A management committee member said the items are now being kept in six boxes in the management office, and that victims who were previously too shy to reclaim the items may now choose to do so.

No police report made

The committee did not lodge a police report against the culprit as they felt the man was young and should be given another chance.

A meeting will be held by the committee to decide what to do with the unclaimed items – whether to donate them to charity organisations or pass them to non-governmental organisations.

Women’s Centre for Change executive director Loh Cheng Kooi said the management should have filed a police report against the culprit, who has since moved out of the condominium.

"Stealing is a crime. This man needs therapy. He has a fetish and needs to see a psychologist to deal with this mental problem," she said.
