Thousands petition to change Aussie dollar to 'Dollarydoos'

This article is more than 12 months old

Someone has started an online petition to change the Australian Currency to "Dollarydoos".

The petition, addressed to the new Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, is currently just 500 signatures shy of its target of 50,000.

The term "Dollarydoos" comes from a 1995 The Simpsons episode called "Bart vs Australia".

In the episode, the father of an Australian boy Tobias became furious over his son's collect call with someone from the US.

Petition creator, Thomas Probst, started the petition five days ago in a bid to boost the country's economy.

He states on the petition page at change.org that:  "This will make millions of people around the world want to get their hands on some Australian currency due to the real-life Simpsons reference, driving up the value of the Australian currency."

The petition is currently trending on Twitter and it seems many Australians are more than welcoming of this possibility.
