One policeman killed, another kidnapped in Sabah attack

One policeman was killed, while another is believed to have been kidnapped by suspected Filipino gunmen after a shootout on Saturday night.

The shootout began at 11pm with an ambush at the Mabul Water Bungalows Resort on diving haven Mabul Island, which is off Semporna in Sabah.

The body of Marine policeman Rajah Jamuan, 32, was found under the jetty while a constable identified as Zakiah Aleip, 26, remains missing.

A massive air and sea hunt is now underway for the eight gunmen who were dressed in military fatigues.

A navy helicopter and patrol boats belonging to different security forces have been combing the Semporna area for the gunmen.

All escape routes off Semporna have been blocked.

Sabah Police Commissioner Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the gunmen might have rowed into the area with their boat and then climbed up the resorts jetty from the back of the building.

It is believed that the gunmen started to shoot randomly towards the restaurant, reception office, and jetty area before fleeing.

Just last week, security was put on alert following a kidnap attempt by seven gunmen at a fish farm in Semporna.
