Shocking words from Delhi bus rapist: 'A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy'

Two years ago, the world was in shock over the brutal gang rape and the eventual death of a 23-year-old girl in New Delhi.

Along with three other attackers, Mukesh Singh is appealing against the death sentence.

In an interview from jail, Singh spoke to Leslee Udwin, who is filming a documentary India's Daughter about rape in the country.

Shockingly, Singh showed no remorse.

Instead, he said that the victim was to blame for her fate.

Singh said: "A decent girl won't roam around at 9 o'clock at night. A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy. Boy and girl are not equal. Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes. About 20 per cent of girls are good."

Singh was also puzzled that the rape caused such a commotion.

On Dec 16 2012, the victim Jyoti Singh had gone to watch a movie with a male friend. At about 8.30pm, they boarded an off-duty bus with six men on board including a juvenile.

The men then beat the friend unconscious and each took turns to rape the woman. They also used an iron rod to sexually assault the woman.

She died 10 days later while seeking treatment in Singapore.

After news of the rape spread around the country, Indian women and men took to the streets to protest the prevalent sexual assault culture in the country.

The rapist Singh said of the heinous act: "When being raped, she shouldn't fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape. Then they'd have dropped her off after 'doing her', and only hit the boy."

And he even said that the death penalty won't be a deterrent for would-be rapists. It would only encourage more monstrosity.

Singh said: "The death penalty will make things even more dangerous for girls. Now when they rape, they won't leave the girl like we did. They will kill her. Before, they would rape and say, 'Leave her, she won't tell anyone.' Now when they rape, especially the criminal types, they will just kill the girl. Death."

Even lawyer AP Singh, who defended the gang in court, echoed his views on women: "If my daughter or sister engaged in pre-marital activities and disgraced herself and allowed herself to lose face and character by doing such things, I would most certaintly take this sort of sister or daughter to my farmhouse, and in front of my entire family, I would put petrol on her and set her alight."
