A 29-year-old woman was severely burned after a vengeful boyfriend allegedly locked her in a burning flat unit in Kuala Lumpur.

A neighbour reportedly saw the man enter the flat unit early yesterday morning while his girlfriend, identified as Ms Sarliza Saidin, was still inside with her 18-month-old baby and her mother, reported Malaysia's The Star.

It is learnt that he had locked the grill door from outside the unit before pouring petrol around it and setting it on fire.

The City Fire and Rescue department received a report saying that there had been a gas explosion in the flat.

About 40 firefighters put out the fire in about 20 minutes, the report said.

All three family members were taken to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Ms Sarliza reportedly suffered 80 per cent burns to her body while her baby had about 50 per cent burns.

Her mother is reported to have suffered 10 per cent burns.
