President officiates DaySpring opening ceremony

The expanded DaySpring Residential Treatment Centre (RTC) and its new Transition Home was officially opened by President Tony Tan Keng Yam last Friday at Turf Club Road.

The expanded residential treatment centre will be able to provide a live-in structured care programme for 16 abused teenage girls, up from 12.

The new transition home will be able to house six residents who are graduates of the therapeutic programme, as an after-care programme.

Since its opening in 2011, DaySpring RTC has helped 36 girls, aged 12 to 16, and their families cope with the trauma of repeated abuse.

There were 157 cases of child abuse (with evidence of abuse) last year, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

Mr Christopher De Souza, MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, said at the opening ceremony that the opening of DaySpring's new Transition Home shows how a community of volunteers who share a common passion and commitment to help a segment of society are able to make a positive difference.
