Rats and roaches seen scurrying around Teck Ghee hawker centre

A netizen found herself dining with unwanted company when she spotted rats and cockroaches at a hawker centre in Teck Ghee.

The woman, known as ST on citizen journalism portal STOMP, was having a late dinner at Teck Ghee Court Market & Food Centre last Thursday (Jan 22) when she noticed the creepy-crawlies.

She told STOMP: "I was eating for about 10 minutes at Teck Ghee Court Market & Food Centre and saw four humongous rats running around me and some cockroaches as companions.

"They were so fast it was difficult for me to take photos of them."

According to Shin Min Daily News, ST was left "disgusted" by the situation.

Statement

The incident prompted the Ang Mo Kio Town Council to release a statement saying that it had informed the National Environment Agency to "continue educating stall owners and market tenants on the importance of good housekeeping inside their stalls and to exercise proper waste disposal" while continuing its "weekly treatment outside the market perimeter and bin centre".

When interviewed by Shin Min, Mr Chen, a 52-year-old who works at a drinks stall at the centre, claims the rodent problem is not new, and said the stallholders are doing what they can to guard against the problem. He said he believes the rodents come from the nearby HDB estate.

He said: "Before we close our stalls, we make sure all our food is kept in the fridge, but this is a problem you cannot guard against completely."
