When his best friend's son was hit by a taxi while riding a motorcycle, Mr Poy (not his real name) was furious.Mr Saifuddin Ahmad Rashid had been on his way to Johor Baru when his motorcycle broke down on the Kranji Expressway (KJE).

His friend, who had been travelling to JB separately, was unable to reach him on the phone after they made plans to meet at a petrol station in JB.

The man found out later that Mr Saifuddin's motorbike had collided with a taxi on the KJE and that he had been rushed to National University Hospital.

Mr Poy, who called the TNP hotline, said: "It's very important for motorists to drive carefully and be more alert."

Mr Poy, who also rides a motorbike, has had his own encounters with danger on the road.

"Once, a taxi stopped right in front of my bike. I was very lucky that I did not have an accident myself," he said.

Mr Poy, who has been reading TNP since it started in 1988, said: "Reading the papers is my hobby, but I only read The New Paper now. I can share the stories with my friends and TNP is always fast in getting the news."

FIRE

Another long-time reader, Mr Andrew Tan, 45, called TNP on Thursday when he saw a field burning in Jurong.

The service engineer, a TNP reader of 20 years, said: "I was driving out for lunch when I saw smoke, so I went closer and saw a huge fire."

He alerted the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) about the fire near the junction of Fourth Chin Bee Road and Corporation Road.

While waiting for the SCDF, Mr Tan tried to put out the fire with a large branch. Another man carried over a bucket of water.

The SCDF later put out the blaze with a water jet.

A reader also called about last Tuesday's fire outside West View Primary School.
