The teacher had scolded him for not handing in his English homework.

The 17-year-old boy from a Shanghai school was so angry that he attacked the teacher with a hammer, Shanghai Daily reported.

The teacher, 37, known only as Ms Yuan, was taken to hospital with a small fracture near her scalp and eight wounds to her head.

In the Wednesday incident, the boy went to the teacher’s office and waited outside the door.

When she asked him about his missing homework, he reached into his bag, pulled out a hammer and began hitting her.

A witness said he heard screams coming from Ms Yuan’s room and several teachers rushed there to investigate.

Lying on the floor

They found her lying on the floor with blood oozing from her head, and spotted the teenager fleeing the scene.

According to police, the boy turned himself in on the same day, accompanied by his father.

He also surrendered the weapon used for the attack.

The police said it was a small round-headed iron hammer with a 10cm shaft.

The hospital said the boy’s parents visited the teacher on Thursday to apologise.
