Indoor fireworks at National Stadium for National Day Parade

This year's National Day Parade (NDP) will be the first to be staged back at the National Stadium after 10 years and the fireworks display is clearly designed to impress.

The fireworks display at the end of the parade will be the largest indoor fireworks display staged inside the National Stadium.

It will consist of about five times more fireworks than the amount used for last year's SEA Games.

At the first NDP preview show on Saturday, the audience got a taste of what to expect on Aug 9.

Military Expert 4 Joel Li, the chief safety officer of the fireworks committee, told The Straits Times: "From the ground up, there will be the comets and mines.

"And for the fireworks flying downwards, we will have the falling stars for a longer burning effect."

Preparations for the indoor fireworks usually begins four days before the event.

A team of 50 officers will pack the fireworks into 98 pyrotechnic boxes.

At the stadium, the boxes are connected to wires at 36 locations lining the sides of the stage, and 26 other locations along the sides of the four ramps. Another 36 boxes are placed on the ground in front of the stage.

Six firework structures are hoisted 45m into the air and secured to the stadium's roof.

For safety reasons, the fireworks are installed at least 5m from performers and 15m from spectators.

Besides the indoor fireworks, another fireworks display will be set off outdoors over the Kallang Basin. - The Straits Times
