ESM Goh to contest General Election
Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM) Goh Chok Tong announced on Friday (Aug 14) that he will be running in the upcoming general election (GE).
This comes after much speculation that Mr Goh would step down, following his Aug 4 Facebook post in which he wrote that he was considering retirement.
But at the Marine Parade National Day dinner on Friday, held at Swissotel the Stamford, he resolved to stand again in his Marine Parade constituency, where he has been an MP since 1976.
It is now a five-member GRC.
Mr Goh, who served as Prime Minister from 1990 to 2004, said he met Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and “had a long chat”.
“He wants me to carry on. He wants me to help in the leadership transition to the fourth generation team as an elder.”
Mr Goh urged voters to make their choices responsibly.
He said: “(Voters) cannot have two standards of integrity, one for the ruling party and another for the opposition parties.
“If they do, they will end up with third world town councils in opposition wards.”
