Eunoia JC to admit students from 2017

The new institution for Integrated Programme (IP) students from three secondary schools has been named Eunoia Junior College.

It will take its first batch of students in 2017 from Catholic High School, CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' School and Singapore Chinese Girls' School.

These IP students will be able to go to JC without taking the O levels.

Acting Minister for Education Ng Chee Meng revealed the name of the institution at the yearly appointment and appreciation ceremony for principals at the Shangri-La Hotel yesterday.

He said the name "Eunoia" has Greek origins and that it means "beautiful thinking" and "goodwill towards others".

"I'm confident that the college will work hard at nurturing students to have these qualities in addition to possessing innovative thinking and developing the Singapore heartbeat," he said.

Madam Cheang Mei Heng is helming Eunoia Junior College, which will be sited at an interim campus in the former Raffles Junior College campus at Mount Sinai.

Its permanent campus, at the junction of Sin Ming Avenue and Marymount Road, will be ready only at the end of 2019.

The new JC will also accept O-level students from other secondary schools.

Mr Ng said Singapore needs to nurture more innovators for it to continue doing well.

CHALLENGE

The challenge, he said, is for principals to make schools conducive for developing students who not only know how to solve problems, but can create and invent.

He urged the educators at the ceremony to consider their roles as Singapore enters its 51st year. Of the 63 principals appointed yesterday, 21 were new appointments.

The country has built a strong education system, but it must stay relevant and not rest on its laurels, said Mr Ng.

He cited two examples of homegrown entrepreneurs who have gone global - water services company Hyflux founder Olivia Lum and Mr Tan Min-Liang, co-founder and chief executive of gaming company Razor.

Mr Ng said students must be encouraged to push boundaries in a school environment that gives them something to believe in and be inspired by.
