A 34-year-old man was sentenced to 24 weeks in jail for taking upskirt videos of about 60 women.

Nantha Kumar Palakrishnan would hide his iPhone in his laptop bag, with the camera facing up.

He would then place the unzipped bag on the floor behind unsuspecting women while the camera was in recording mode.

Between July and August 2013, he targeted women in shops such as Popular and Fairprice, reported The Straits Times.

Nantha was caught on Aug 26 that year in a Daiso outlet at Plaza Singapura, when the male colleague of one of his victims, a 34-year-old banker, spotted him placing the bag behind her and adjusting it.

The colleague, 28, grabbed the bag and demanded to know what Nantha was doing.

Apologised

Nantha immediately apologised to him, but the colleague opened the bag and discovered the phone, which was in recording mode.

Police later raided Nantha's Yishun flat and seized a laptop with numerous upskirt videos.

He was charged with 59 counts of insulting the modesty of a woman. Eight of the charges were proceeded with.

For each charge, Nantha could have been jailed for up to one year and fined.
