Probation for deaf-mute boy who stole bus
The deaf-mute boy who stole a private bus and took it on a joy ride was given 24 months' probation on Wednesday (July 8).
Muhammad Salahuddin Omar, 17, stole the bus from a Woodlands industrial park on March 8, driving it at least 60km for about 45 minutes.
Six months of the probation will be intensive, and 18 months will be supervised.
The court heard that Muhammad Salahuddin's parents could only understand about 20 per cent of what he said because they did not understand sign language.
During sentencing, Community Court judge Matthew Joseph told the boy's parents they should learn sign language so they could communicate better with their son.
