Second pangolin on campus

This article is more than 12 months old

On Tuesday, a pangolin was found at Nanyang Technological University, and on Saturday, one was spotted at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

A video uploaded by student Ong Kah Jing on Facebook showed the creature gingerly making its way down a flight of stairs at the NUS University Town.

Rescuers from the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres) turned up at around 10.45pm.

By then, a small, excited crowd had gathered around the nocturnal animal.

The animal was "calm and just kept walking", said Acres wildlife group director Kalai Balakrishnan.

It was given a quick visual check for injuries before it was put in a carrier and handed to the zoo for it to be microchipped and placed in a safe habitat.

Pangolins are not aggressive, said Mr Kalai. If you see one, call the Acres wildlife rescue hotline at 9783-7782.

Endangered in many places because of wildlife trafficking, pangolins are sought after in China and other parts of Asia for their meat, skin and scales. The skin and scales are used in traditional medicine.
