SFX make-up tricks this Halloween
He has been a make-up artist for the past eight years but it was only early last year that he delved into the world of special effects make-up.
Take a peek at Mr Kel Liew's Instagram page (@kellwx) and one would see realistic photos of gruesome gaping burn wounds, deep bleeding cuts, bloody tendons and more.
They are all the results of his self-taught techniques but they are enough to make stomachs turn.
Mr Liew, 38, told The New Paper: "I find that it is challenging to create effects that are believable and I enjoy that challenge. I look at YouTube, or will Google images online for inspiration.
"I also look at real photos of actual accidents and try to mimic as closely as possible."
While most of the products used are purchased online from the US and UK, some are everyday tools that are readily available.
Some are more unique like cigarette ash that his friends helped collect while others include nail tools like a cuticle pusher and dental instruments.
Mr Liew has helped on the sets of Toggle drama series Trapped Minds and Channel 5 thriller Zero Calling 2, with his work seen on local artistes Ann Kok and Pierre Png.
To date, he has spent between $1,000 and $1,500 on products which form his ever-growing make-up kit.
"I've received feedback from nurses that say some of my works closely resemble actual wounds and cuts," he said.
His works seem so realistic that some of his Instagram followers have reported a handful of photos, thinking they were photos of self-inflicted wounds.
This Halloween, Mr Liew shared with TNP a step-by-step guide to creating a deep wound and deep cut.
