Art & technology collide in S'pore's first Festival of Tech

Those looking to catch a siesta before their movie at The Cathay can now do so.

Starting today, 12 hammocks will be on display outside The Cathay at Handy Road - allowing people to drop by for a 15-minute snooze.

This public sleep laboratory is called The Chronarium and is created by London-based art and design studio Loop.pH. Visitors will be immersed in pink noise and soft, coloured light, coaxing the mind into a relaxed, restful state for a quick pick-me-up.

The Chronarium, which will be on display till Oct 15, is part of the Festival of Tech - the first such event that showcases the impact of technology on future lives through installations, and video and art exhibits.

The festival, organised by the Infocomm Development of Authority, will run from today till Oct 18.

The other exhibits include Hello Lamp Post - an interactive display that allows visitors to chat with the Merlion and other objects found on the street such as lamp posts and fire hydrants.

Visitors can send an SMS message to the street object by keying in the object's identification number in their text message.

They will get an SMS reply and the object may even have a few questions of its own.
