Bus driver jailed for causing death of pedestrian

A bus driver who caused the death of an elderly pedestrian on the first day of his official duties with SBS Transit was yesterday jailed for six weeks and banned from driving for five years.

Malaysian Wong Kum Fatt (above), 36, was driving an SBS Transit bus which hit Mr Wee Joon Kin, 78.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Andre Chong said Wong was making his second trip on feeder service 235 on July 7 at about 6.20am when he stopped at a signalised T-junction at Lorong 6 Toa Payoh as the traffic light was red.

When the light turned green, he made a left turn into Lorong 6 after taking a cursory glance to his left. He did not see Mr Wee, who had started crossing the road on a green man signal.

Mr Wee was pronounced dead at the scene at 6.50am.

Pleading for leniency, Wong's lawyer Rajan Supramaniam said his client is deeply remorseful.
